‘America’s Got Talent’ laps the television field


Much to NBC’s delight, there really hasn’t been much competition for “America’s Got Talent” as the summer’s favorite television show.

Last week’s version of the competition was seen by 12.4 million people, the Nielsen company said Thursday. That’s nearly 5 million more than the week’s second most popular show, “World of Dance,” which has the advantage of following “Talent” on NBC’s schedule on Tuesday nights.

On the complete opposite end of the spectrum, Katherine Heigl, Laverne Cox, Dule Hill and Elliott Gould are starring in CBS’ version of “Burn-off Theater.”

They were the ensemble in the network drama “Doubt,” which crashed on arrival during its February premiere. CBS canceled the series after it aired only twice, but since it had bought 13 episodes, the network wanted to get at least something for its investment. So last week it began dumping the episodes on Saturday night in the midsummer, the television version of the Sahara. It was seen by 1.7 million people.

NBC won the week in prime time, averaging 5.1 million viewers. CBS had 4.4 million, ABC had 3.5 million, Fox had 2.1 million, Univision had 1.5 million, ION Television had 1.4 million, Telemundo had 1.2 million and the CW had 780,000.

Fox News Channel was the week’s most popular cable network, averaging 2.24 million viewers in prime time. MSNBC had 1.58 million, HGTV had 1.44 million, USA had 1.34 million and TBS had 1.24 million.

ABC’s “World News Tonight” topped the evening newscasts with an average of 7.4 million viewers. NBC’s “Nightly News” had 7.2 million and the “CBS Evening News” had 5.7 million.

For the week of June 26-July 2, the top 10 shows, their networks and viewerships: “America’s Got Talent” (Tuesday), NBC, 12.36 million; “World of Dance,” NBC, 7.5 million; “The Big Bang Theory,” CBS, 6.59 million; “Little Big Shots: Forever Young,” NBC, 6.56 million; “NCIS,” CBS, 6.19 million; “American Ninja Warrior,” NBC, 5.91 million; “Big Brother” (Wednesday), CBS, 5.88 million; “NCIS: New Orleans,” CBS, 5.86 million; “60 Minutes,” CBS, 5.62 million; “Bull,” CBS, 5.46 million.
