Ten-year-old Daniel Success, a Primary Six pupil from Our Lady of Apostles, Abeokuta, Ogun State, emerged as the overall best in the Annual Spelling Bee Competition, which saw participation from 53 schools across Abeokuta South, Ogun State.
The competition was held at Methodist Nursery/Primary School, Oke-Yeke, Abeokuta, Ogun State. Success went home with a mini-computer (tablet), a school bag, a mathematical set, and a set of writing materials, among other prizes.
The event, now in its fourth edition, was organised by the Children Empowerment Fund, a non-governmental organisation. It was attended by the Head of Academics and School Services, Abeokuta, Ogun State, Mrs Esther Martins.
Programme Manager of Children Empowerment Fund, Temitope Akinrotimi, stated that about 600 words were provided to the children to learn and understand their synonyms, aiming to expand their minds and prepare them for a competitive global village.
She urged the government to support NGOs like the Children Empowerment Fund, highlighting their collaborative efforts such as the Back to School Project, which currently has about 200 children on its scholarship list.
Martins praised the programme, emphasizing that spelling is a crucial skill for mastering the English language and that the interactive nature of the competition was beneficial for the children.
Success attributed her win to hard work, and her teacher, Mrs Deborah Oluwole, who expressed her delight at seeing one of her pupils come first.
