The West has been destabilizing Ukraine for years by «pedaling the myth» that Ukrainians would soon be admitted to the European Union, co-convener of the Scottish Socialist Party Colin Fox told RIA Novosti Monday.
“The West — the EU, UK and USA – has been out to destabilize Ukraine for many years by pedaling the myth that Ukrainians could soon be admitted to the EU and thereafter they would all enjoy German standards of living,” the former member of the Scottish Parliament said.
“The fears of the east of the country [Ukraine], with its strong ties to Russia, that it will be left behind have been not been ameliorated,” Fox said, adding that the political crisis in Ukraine shows no signs of abating and the election of a new Parliament in Kiev is widely expected to make no difference.
Fox was speaking after voters in the self-proclaimed Donetsk and Luhansk People’s Republics took part in historic elections on November 2, which have been condemned by the West. But Russia’s Foreign Ministry stated that it will “respect the will of the people in the south-east [of Ukraine]”.
Fox told RIA Novosti that the lack of recognition for the democratic elections of the Donetsk and Luhansk regions mirrored the Spanish Government’s contempt for elections in Catalonia, where an independence referendum will take place in the coming week. Spain described the referendum as “illegal”.
“There is little doubt the Catalan people will again back Independence in huge numbers in next week’s referendum,” Fox said. “Whether the Spanish Government takes a blind bit of notice is of course another matter.”
According to Fox, a similar impasse appears to have been reached in Ukraine.
