The United States’ recent appeals for other countries to give up trade with Russia are absurd, a senior Russian lawmaker said Saturday.

“The United States called on countries around the world to abandon deals with Russia. I think their call will not be heard outside their closest allies. [The calls are] absurd,” the head of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Russian State Duma (lower house of parliament), Alexei Pushkov, said via his official Twitter account.
On Friday, US State Department spokesperson Jen Psaki told reporters that the United States is unhappy with large-scale contracts that Russian and Indian companies have signed this week, stressing that it continues to «urge all countries not to conduct business as usual with Russia.”
Russian President Vladimir Putin visited New Delhi to discuss bilateral cooperation with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday.
Upwards of 20 deals have been signed between the two countries, including an agreement to build 10 nuclear reactors in India, a 10-year crude oil delivery contract and an expansion in military cooperation.
During the one-day visit, Modi pledged that despite increased options, Russia will remain India’s «most important defense partner.”
