(AA) – Three farmers have died while trying to recover gold from a deserted mine in China’s central Henan province, with six others hospitalized due to poisoning from toxic fumes.

State news agency Xinhua reported Tuesday that rescuers discovered the victims Saturday after members of the public submitted tips regarding illegal mining efforts.

The miners were all local farmers, according to a police investigation, and had been attempting to use chemicals including sodium cyanide to extract gold.

The nine farmers were apparently poisoned by the emitted gases.

Investigations into the case are ongoing.
