(AA) – Qatari Emir Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani arrived in Egypt’s Red Sea town of Sharm el-Sheikh on Saturday to attend an Arab summit.

The Qatari leader was welcomed at the airport by Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi.

The visit is the first by Tamim to Egypt since he came to the helm of power in the Gulf country in mid-2013.

The visit comes at a time of diplomatic tension between Egypt and Qatar, despite a slight thaw in relations in late 2014 at the behest of late Saudi King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz.

On Thursday, a senior Arab diplomat told The Anadolu Agency that Egypt was looking into a Saudi request to hold a tripartite summit to discuss ways of easing tension between the two countries.

Relations between Cairo and Doha nosedived following the ouster in mid-2013 of Mohamed Morsi, Egypt’s first freely elected president and a leader of the now-outlawed Muslim Brotherhood.

Egypt accused Doha, which had been a key ally of the Morsi administration, of interfering in its affairs by supporting the Brotherhood and hosting a number of wanted Brotherhood figures following Morsi’s ouster.

Cairo also cites critical coverage of Egypt by Qatar’s Al Jazeera news channel and its affiliate, Al Jazeera Mubasher Misr, which – before its closure last December – had been devoted exclusively to covering events in Egypt.
