(AA) – One person died on Tuesday and 240 others were injured when two commuter trains collided at Denver Station south of Johannesburg.
“My colleague, a security guard, died in the accident,” a train security guard, preferring anonymity, told The Anadolu Agency at the scene.
During Tuesday’s morning rush hour, a train coming from Pretoria struck a locomotive parked at Denver Station.
“There was a loud bang and people’s screams were heard all over the area,” said the traumatized guard.
Dozens of injured people were carried from the scene to awaiting ambulances, which took them to nearby hospitals for treatment.
A spokesperson for South Africa’s Metro Rail was not immediately available for comment.
Rail accidents are uncommon in South Africa, where tens of thousands of people depend on trains to commute to work, schools and other destinations.
