‘Black Eagles’ soar atop Turkish league

(AA) – The “Black Eagles” of Besiktas are leaders of the Turkish first division Spor Toto Super League after a narrow 2-1 win against Karabukspor on Monday.

The Istanbul side opened the scoring after 25 minutes with a goal from midfielder Atiba Hutchinson but failed to score more even after Karabukspor’s Dutch goalkeeper Bot Waterman was sent off when he blocked a ball with his hand outside the box. The first half ended 1-0.

Ten-man Karabuk produced good chances in the start of the second half and Besiktas’ substitute Necip Uysal was sent off after blocking a goal chance for the visitors with a foul, only four minutes after entering the game.

Karabukspor hit back with Musa Cagiran in the 79th minute to level the score: 1-1.

Besiktas found a chance to come back in the final minute and Turkish striker Cenk Tosun’s header brought victory to home side six minutes into injury time.

Monday evening’s win helps Besiktas raise their points to 61 and gives them the top position with goal difference over Istanbul rivals Galatasaray, who also won this week.

The difference-maker was last week’s leaders Fenerbahce’s 1-1 draw in an away game against Eskisehirspor.
