Bombing kills 7 in Somalia’s Puntland region

UN-bus-blast-555x740The death toll of a bombing that targeted a bus carrying UN workers in the semi-autonomous Puntland region in Somalia has risen to eight, including five foreigners, a security source has said.

“The bus departed the UNICEF building and was hit by a bomb while en route to the office of the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organization in Puntland’s capital Garoowe,” a security source, requesting anonymity, told The Anadolu Agency.

“The bombing left eight people dead, including three Somalis and five foreigners,” the source said.

Puntlander authorities have yet to officially comment on the incident.

Puntland, which enjoys semi-autonomy since 1991, has its own government and parliament, but does not seek independence from Somalia.

The region has recently been hit by a series of attacks, most of which were claimed by Al-Shabaab militant group.
