(AA) – Egyptian authorities released 40 Gaza Strip Palestinians who were jailed in Egypt, the Interior Ministry in the Gaza Strip has said.

It added on Facebook late on Tuesday that Egyptian authorities also allowed the released Palestinians to reach the blockaded Palestinian territory through Rafah crossing on Egypt’s northeastern border with Gaza.

It did not, however, mention further details about the circumstances of the detention of the 40 Palestinians in Egypt or the duration of their detention.

Anadolu Agency could not immediately obtain comments from Egyptian authorities on the remarks of the Gaza Interior Ministry either.

On Jan. 21, Egyptian authorities released 45 Palestinians and allowed them to reach Gaza through Rafah crossing, following months of detention in Egypt.

The 45 Palestinians were accused of illegally crossing the border into Egypt.
