Man City trio may miss League Cup final against Arsenal after FA Cup shock at Wigan

Why Arsenal could be big winners of Man City meltdown against Wigan
Sergio Aguero was involved in an altercation after the final whistle

Sergio Aguero and Pep Guardiola could potentially join Fabian Delph in missing Sunday’s League Cup final against Arsenal after the events of Manchester City’s shock FA Cup exit to Wigan. A goal from Will Grigg condemned Man City to a shock 1-0 loss in the FA Cup and ended hopes of the club completing an unprecedented quadruple. But a series of controversial incidents could have a knock-on effect.

Manchester City face Arsenal in the League Cup final at Wembley this coming weekend but will do so without Delph, whose straight red card for a dangerous tackle will see him suspended for three games starting with Sunday’s match.

Meanwhile, Aguero was involved in an altercation with a fan who invaded the pitch after the full-time whistle. The Argentinean appeared to push the supporter and then had to be restrained.

Guardiola was also involved in unsavoury scenes with the Spaniard becoming embroiled in a row with Wigan’s manager Paul Cook as the teams headed down the tunnel at half-time. Video footage also appeared to show Guardiola running at the referee.

The FA could bring charges against both Aguero and Guardiola for their conduct at Wigan and if the case is resolved swiftly they could be hit with suspensions. Any bans, if issued before the weekend, would count towards the League Cup final with FA suspensions counting towards all domestic competitions. Guardiola tried to play down the tunnel incident after the match. ‘Guys, if you want to ask me about football, [ask] about football, nothing happened in the tunnel,’ he told the media. ‘Nothing happened with my colleague. Nothing. So, it was: “please, stay in your position”, that’s all. And that’s finished.’

While Guardiola will hope the incident goes away, considering Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho was given a one-match ban for kicking a water bottle last season, the FA may be compelled to act. The loss of Aguero meanwhile would be a huge blow for Man City, with the forward scoring in both legs of the League Cup semi-final. In addition, back-up striker Gabriel Jesus is a serious injury doubt.
