Bayern Munich defender Jerome Boateng hit out at referee Cuneyt Çakir for failing to award his side a penalty during their heartbreaking Champions League exit to Real Madrid. Madrid had a 2-1 advantage over the Bundesliga giants heading into the second leg at the Bernabeu but the Germans took an early lead in Spain through Joshua Kimmich. However, a Karim Benzema double put Madrid back in the ascendancy and though Bayern levelled on the night through James Rodriguez they couldn’t find the all important third goal to put themselves in the final. Bayern were arguably the better team over both legs and were certainly the better side at the Bernabeu and they’ll regret a host of missed changes. However, Boateng – missing the game through injury – pointed the finger at referee Cakir after he failed to give his side a penalty for what he deemed to be a clear handball in the second half.

‘No penalty?! Come on…’ tweeted Boateng. Cakir will be familiar to Manchester United fans, who will never forgive the ref for sending off Luis Nani during a Champions League tie against Real Madrid in 2013. Madrid’s 2-2 draw means they’ll face one of Liverpool or Roma in the final but the Reds are overwhelming favourites to reach the Kiev showpiece due to their 5-2 aggregate lead.
