German Finance Minister Olaf Scholz said on Monday he wanted to increase taxes on domestic flights in a bid to tackle CO2 emissions, several days before the government is expected to present a far-reaching package of climate protection measures.

“We have the ticket tax and we want to increase it for domestic flights,” Scholz, a member of the Social Democrats – junior partner in Chancellor Angela Merkel’s ruling coalition said.

Merkel’s conservatives want to increase taxes on domestic flights and reduce the cost of long-distance train tickets, a party document seen by Reuters on Friday showed.
