Organisers of the Governor’s Para-Swimming Classics have unveiled plans for 40 para-swimmers to benefit from a five-day scientific training and analysis programme which will inspire Nigerian para-swimmers to greater heights.

This was disclosed by the convener and vice president of the para-swimming federation, Bose Kafo, at a media parley ahead of the programme scheduled for March 17 to 22 at the National Stadium, Lagos.

Kafo stated that the training was organised to help train swimmers scientifically in order to give their best while representing the country in major tourneys.

“We’re honouring the spirit of sports with this great programme. Day one of the event will witness a podium challenge while the five-day training continues. We found out that our para-swimmers are lagging in resistance, endurance and physiological aspects of their welfare. All these will be exposed to them in the course of the exercise.”

She added, “We have upper limb, lower limb and intellectual amputees, these three categories of people will benefit more from the programme. All we need is 40 to 45 swimmers who are ready to make an impact by improving the system. The door is open for all and we’ll be going the extra mile tabling 60 per cent of their transportation. We’ll also have doctors and ambulance on standby for safety reasons and I can assure you it’s going to end with lots of awards and prizes.”

Also, the president of Nigeria Paralympics Federation, Sunday Odebode, said the federation would do the needful in ensuring “persons of determination” enjoyed their stay.

“In our clime we address these athletes as P.O.D, meaning “persons of determination.” As a federation, we have a lot of plans for them and I can assure you we’ll be luring the National Sports Commission to further give the exercise the leverage it deserves. I’m glad to reveal we’re working round the clock to make sure things go well as planned,” he assured.
