The Ikoyi-Obalende cell of the Building Collapse Prevention Guild has urged President Bola Tinubu to fix the deteriorating state of several national monuments and Federal Government properties in the Ikoyi area of Lagos State including those adjacent to the personal residence of the President.
In a statement, the group lamented that Ikoyi had recently witnessed a trend of building collapses which had, hitherto, been a rarity due to strict adherence to construction regulations.
The BCPG noted that the neglected Federal Government buildings in the area have become hotspots for criminal activities, exacerbating concerns about safety and security.
According to the group, among these Federal Government structures that have been abandoned is the Federal Secretariat Complex, Ikoyi Towers.
It called for revitalisation efforts to safeguard these historic landmarks and mitigate the negative impact on Ikoyi’s residents and stakeholders.
The statement partly read, “As this administration approaches its first anniversary in office, the Building Collapse Prevention Guild Ikoyi-Obalende Cell wishes to bring to the attention of His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu the deteriorating state of some national monuments/ Federal Government property within our oversight area, Ikoyi, where Mr. President’s residence is located.
“From our records, Ikoyi has experienced five incidences of building collapse. Some neglected Federal Government buildings in our neighbourhood have become havens for criminals, illicit drug peddlers, squatters, and illegal occupants, tarnishing the reputation of Ikoyi. We are concerned that lack of occupancy and regular maintenance are contributing to their faster dilapidation.”
