The Association of Certified Fraud Examiners, South-West Nigeria Chapter, has intensified efforts to combat financial fraud in Nigeria by marking International Fraud Awareness Week.

The week-long activities featured strategic engagements, capacity building, and collaborative initiatives aimed at fostering transparency and accountability across sectors.

A key highlight was a courtesy visit to the Nigerian office of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants.

The visit underscored the importance of collaboration in combating corruption. ACCA Country Head, Mr. Tom Isibor, emphasised the value of partnerships, noting that “Partnerships like these reinforce the fight against corruption in Nigeria.”

The ACFE also hosted a well-attended webinar focused on building anti-fraud programmes. Facilitator Fiyinfolu Okedare stressed the importance of implementing tailored strategies.

“Prevention starts with robust programmes that integrate ethics and accountability,” Okedare said.

A panel discussion on ethics and fraud further drove home the anti-fraud message. Experts, including Oluwatomi Benson from KPMG West Africa, discussed the balance between risk and deception.

Benson said, “Ethical decision-making is central to mitigating fraud risks.”

Corporate engagement formed another pillar of the week’s activities, with visits to organisations such as TVC Communications, KPMG Nigeria, and Forvis Mazars. These collaborations emphasised knowledge sharing and joint action in addressing systemic fraud.

Olawuyi Saheed of KPMG remarked, “Collaboration is key to addressing systemic fraud risks.”

On her part, the President of the Association of the Certified Fraud Examiners South-West, Nigeria, Dr. Titilayo Fowokan, highlighted the importance of continuous learning; continuous learning ensures our members stay ahead in a constantly evolving landscape.

Under Fowokan’s leadership, the chapter has implemented a 7-point agenda focused on capacity building, social visibility, and anti-fraud collaboration.

“Our goal is to foster accountability and strengthen professional competence in fraud examination,” she added.

Reflecting on the year’s achievements, Fowokan expressed optimism, “The progress we have made in 2024 sets a strong foundation for a fraud-free Nigeria.

“Looking ahead to 2025, the ACFE plans to deepen its initiatives, encouraging ethical practices and transparency across Nigeria’s sectors.

“As fraud continues to threaten Nigeria’s development, the ACFE’s efforts provide a beacon of hope. Stakeholders are urged to join the collective fight to build a culture of integrity and accountability,” she stated.
