(AA) — At least 16 people were killed and 30 injured Friday night when a bus and a train collided in the town of Anahuac in the Mexican state of Nuevo Leon.

State authorities said the bus was hit by the train at approximately 6 p.m. local time (GMT1200) in the area of the Camarones train station in the northern area of the state that shares a border with the U.S. state of Texas.

The bus that was overcrowded, according to authorities, tried to overtake the train at a railroad crossing when the crash occurred.

Members of the civil force of Nuevo Laredo and soldiers were assisting victims who were taken to two area hospitals.
