Nigeria international Akor Adams has been ruled out of Sevilla’s La Liga clash with Barcelona on Sunday after suffering a tendon injury during Thursday’s training session, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

The striker, who recently joined the Spanish club from Montpellier in a €5.5m deal, picked up the injury alongside Belgian midfielder Sambi Lokonga at Ciudad Deportiva.

“The club can confirm that both Sambi Lokonga and Akor Adams were injured during Thursday’s training session at the Ciudad Deportiva after suffering muscle injuries. The Belgian midfielder has a tendon injury in his hamstring, while the Nigerian forward has a tendon injury in his thigh muscle,” Sevilla confirmed in a statement.

While the extent of the injury is yet to be confirmed, reports suggest the 25-year-old could face a lengthy recovery period of between four to 12 months.

The setback comes shortly after Adams made his debut for Sevilla in their 0-0 draw against Getafe, having signed a contract until 2029.

Upon joining the club, Adams had expressed his eagerness to rediscover his goalscoring form in Spain.

“The most important thing is that I am fit and mentally ready. I have had a very warm welcome since I arrived and I will join the group and try to adapt as quickly as possible, getting better with each game,” he had told the club website.

Sporting Director Víctor Orta previously praised the striker’s qualities saying, “He is a player we have been following for some time.

“He can bring us physicality, speed, play with his back to goal and energy. He is a very complete striker who has already played in a competitive league like the French league.”

Sevilla, who are currently on a four-match unbeaten streak in La Liga with three draws and one victory, face a stern test against Barcelona, who are unbeaten in their last 10 matches across all competitions, scoring 37 goals during this run.

The clash will take place at the Estadio Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán, where Barcelona haven’t lost since suffering a 2-0 defeat in the Copa Del Rey in 2021.
