Provost, Wavecrest College, Lagos, Rosana Forsuelo has said that with the growing working-age population in Africa, the continent leaders must enhance only education career opportunities that are innovative and remain in demand in an ever-changing world.

Forsuelo gave the charge when the Wavecrest College of Hospitality, Surulere, Lagos, matriculated 70 students for the 2024/2025 academic session.

She said, “With Africa’s growing working age population predicted to increase 3 times by 2050, African nations must improve their educational career opportunities that will be in demand.

“I encourage every student to embrace the opportunities that lie ahead, stay curious, be innovative, and always strive for excellence and growth. Together, we will shape the future of hospitality and create a world where every guest feels valued and cherished.

“We affirm our commitment to providing them with the guidance, resources, and support they need to succeed. We encourage them to embrace every opportunity for growth, to push the boundaries of their potential, and to approach their studies with curiosity and enthusiasm,” she said.

In her address, she emphasized the importance of hard work, discipline, and determination to achieve academic success.

She also urged the new students to embrace opportunities that would impact society meaningfully.

Importantly, she tasked the students with the spirit of service, personal responsibility, integrity, respect for others, industriousness and teamwork.

“The hospitality industry thrives on the principles of service, professionalism, and attention to detail. It requires not only knowledge and skill but also a passion for creating memorable experiences for others.

“We hope that as our students progress through their studies, they will not only acquire the necessary expertise but also develop a deep appreciation for the impact they can have on the lives of others,” she added.

The Provost reiterated the college’s determination to deliver quality training and education in the field of hospitality through digitalization.

“We have built the Wavecrest Learning Management System and trained our staff to be computer savvy to continually provide updated skills that match the current and future needs of the country,” she said.

In her lecture, titled, “Building Blocks for Leadership in Hospitality-Navigating Challenges with Resilience,” the Outlet Manager, Sheraton Hotel, Lagos, Feyisayo Oluwaseyi, emphasised the importance of embracing growth opportunities and taking calculated risks in pursuit of one’s goals and aspirations.

She urged the new students to be resilient in their academic pursuit to attain excellence.

She said, “Wavecrest College empowers young girls with hospitality education and skill for distinction in the hospitality world.

“The future of hospitality needs great leaders who know the way, go the way and show the way.”

Furthermore, she urged them to adopt a growth mindset, commit to life-long learning and build relationships that would sharpen their future.

“As you begin your journey at Wavecrest College, I urge the students to be open to new experiences, take risks, and seize relevant growth opportunities as they arise.

“Remember that growth and success are not solely defined by academic achievement, but also by the relationships you build, the skills you develop, and the positive impact you have on your community,” she added.

Earlier, the Registrar of the college, Veronica Esode encouraged the intakes to stay focused and build an outstanding future for themselves.

She said, “It is encouraging to see young girls in school. It is the beginning of many great things and so much hope for the future. I urge the matriculants to learn and stay focused and build their future.”
