Ajegunle, a Lagos neighbourhood, will host the Ogedegbe U-12 football tournament January 6th, 7th, 13th and 14th at the Navy Barracks.
The tournament is sponsored by ex-international, Nathaniel Ogedegbe.
Ogedegbe said he would be bringing his wealth of experience as a footballer and youth coach to help identify and nurture young talents in Ajegunle, where the like of Emmanuel Amuneke, Odion Ighalo, Ifeanyi Udeze among others, who played for the Super Eagles, were discovered through talent scouting initiatives.
“I believe that the tournament will help address youth restiveness and positively engage them,” he said.
“The event serves as a platform to horne their (youths) skills, expose themselves and become better.”
The former Flying Eagles star attended and played for St Finbarr’s College, Yaba, Lagos.
He was captain of the school football team, before being selected to play for the first U-20 national team. He was then drafted to play for the then Green Eagles, along with former coach of the Super Eagles, the late Stephen Keshi and Henry Nwosu.
Afterwards, Ogedegbe was recruited from Nigeria to join the United States men’s soccer programme in 1981.
While at Alabama A&M University, he received several personal recognitions, including being inducted into the Alabama Hall of Fame in 2013.
Currently, Ogedegbe is the Director of Flawless Soccer in the US, a part time pursuit for the former Green Eagle, who is a civilengineer.
