Southampton midfielder Joe Aribo has revealed the club’s plan to give everything to remain in the English Premier League at the end of the season, despite sitting bottom of the table with just nine points after 24 games.
The Saints secured their first away win of the season on Saturday at Portman road against Ipswich Town, courtesy of an 87th-minute winner by Paul Onuachu.
Aribo scored the Saints opener in the game to set up a double Nigerian impact.
Speaking after the game, the former Rangers midfielder urged his side to put up a fight to stay in the English top-flight league.
“For us, it’s an amazing feeling, really important for us to get that result. We knew how big that game was and we had to fight and you saw us fighting and it was just amazing to get that result.
“I think it just shows the character of the boys, how together we are, how much we’re willing to fight for each other. You know, we can’t do this individually, we’ve got to fight together and that’s all you have to do in the upcoming games,” the Super Eagles midfielder said via Southampton’s official website.
“I’m more willing to do anything to get us over the line. We have to fight together again. So if I’ve got to go into a position that I’m not familiar with, then I’m going to have to just do it to the best of my ability,” the 28-year-old midfielder added.
He also praised his compatriot, Onuachu, for his late strike which got Ivan Juric’s team over the line.
“The late winner from Onuachu was a massive relief because I was in the left centre back and as I’m running over, I’m trying to sprint, but I’ve got nothing left in my legs and just I’m jogging with my hands out. So yeah, it was an amazing feeling.”
Up next for the Saints is an FA Cup fourth-round game against Burnley on Saturday. After that, they take on Andoni Iraola’s Bournemouth.
