Badagry Angels emerged champions of the Lagos U-15 Softball Championship after defeating Rak Angels 9-1 in the final at the Badagry Grammar School playing field.

The five-day tournament, which began on November 11, featured eight teams competing for honours in a developmental championship aimed at developing the sport at the grassroots level.

Lagos State Sports Commission Director-General, Lekan Fatodu, represented by Director of Sports Development, Travih Nunayon, said the tournament was designed to expand Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s cardinal programme of inclusivity across all divisions of the state.

“We have mapped out the five divisions to know the sports peculiar to different communities and provide opportunities for every community to engage in sports and further contribute to the growth of identified talents in achieving their potential,” Fatodu said.

“It’s been a long journey of six-month cumulative training of our coaches, working with various students in their schools, which we’ve tried to form clubs, grow these athletes and increase their level of interest.”

LSSC board member, Saidi Olanrewaju, added that the championship aligned with the THEMES Plus Agenda of Sanwo-Olu’s administration to reinvigorate sports development at the grassroots level.

Badagry Angels captain and third baser, Ifeoluwa Oluwafemi, expressed her desire to become a professional player after leading her team to victory.

“I look forward to showcasing my talents across the world and competing at an international level among professionals,” she said.

Rak Angels finished as runners-up, while Kosoko Team claimed third place. Individual honours went to Rak Angels’ Alia Olatunde (best catcher), SHS’s Koku Yemaise (best pitcher) and Badagry Grammar School’s Kuton Seseyon (best in-fielder).
