The Director-General, National Youth Service Corp, Brig-Gen. Yusha’u Ahmed has urged corps members serving in Zamfara State to be security conscious.

The DG also advised them to avoid unnecessary travelling during the one-year compulsory national service.

Ahmed made the call on Saturday while addressing the 2024 Batch ‘C’ Stream II corps members at the temporary orientation camp in Gusau, the state capital.

He said the scheme was committed to corps members’ safety and welfare, adding that the NYSC management had always been responsive to the welfare and security of corps members.

Ahmed said he was impressed with the peaceful condition of the camp, as camp activities were going on smoothly.

“Security and welfare of the corps members is always the top priority agenda of the NYSC management. I’m happy with the security arrangement in this orientation camp and the entire state.

“It’s very commendable that, despite reports of security challenges, Zamfara remains peaceful. I, therefore, urge you to be serious about your safety,” he urged the corps members.

The DG advised corps members to take the skills acquisition programme during the orientation course seriously to be well-equipped for self-employment after service.

He advised the corps members to learn at least two skills under the Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development programme before the end of the service year.

“I call on you to utilise the service year and build your lives for the future because white-collar jobs are hard to get today in this country.

“This is the reason the Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) was established to equip the corps members for self-employment.

”I’m happy to inform you that many of your predecessors who embraced vocational and entrepreneurial training of the SAED platform are now millionaires,” Ahmed said.

The DG also urged corps members to be disciplined and at all times respect the culture and religion of “your host communities.”

“Your dressing must be according to the NYSC regulations. You must take your primary assignment seriously to achieve something from the one-year mandatory service, ” he said.

Earlier, the State NYSC Coordinator, Lawan Ahmed described the DG’s visit to the camp as a welcome development.

He expressed appreciation for the support from the NYSC for the sustainability of the scheme in the state.
