The Blue Team emerged winners of the maiden Nextfootballstars Foundation tournament after they defeated Aquamarine Team 4-3 on penalties following a goalless result on full time at the Legacy pitch of the National Stadium in Surulere, Lagos State on Saturday.
Nextfootballstars Foundation tournament is a scouting football tourney aimed at helping aspiring young and talented footballers realise their dreams of turning professionals.
Over 200 players drawn into various teams across the state took part in the event which saw Michael Taiwo named the most valuable player of the tourney following his exceptional display. He received a cash prize of N50,000 for his efforts.
The Blue Team received a prize money of N200,000 for their feat while the second-placed Aquamarine Team got N100,000.
Speaking shortly after the event, founder of the NextFootballStars foundation, Edike Myra, expressed her delight at putting smiles on the faces of the youngsters who took part in the tourney and won lots of gift items adding that she hopes to sponsor the over 1000 kids through secondary school.
“I feel fulfilled putting smiles on the faces of these players and I believe that it will be in their memories for life,” Myra said.
“The foundation was set up to solve the critical needs of kids from the less privileged areas in the state and we believe that through football and education, these promising kids can realise their potential.”
The next edition of the tournament will be staged in Abuja.
