In preparation for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, members of the Nigeria Boxing Federation, officials and athletes who will represent Team Nigeria have safely arrived at Ilaji Hotels and Sports Resort, Oyo State on Monday for local camping, PRIMANEWS Sports Extra reports.
The Paris Olympics holds from July 26 to August 11, 2024.
The boxing federation previously camped at the same venue before the last African Games, where they won eight gold and two silver medals.
Three states, namely Oyo, Lagos, Bayelsa and the Federal Capital Territory, have been chosen by the Ministry of Sports Development as venues for athletes to intensify preparations for the Games.
National coach Tony Konyegwachie told PRIMANEWS Sports Extra that two of the three Nigerian boxers who qualified for the Olympics, Omole Dolapo and Cynthia Ogunsemilore, have arrived at the camp for training.
UK-based Olaore Adams, the third boxer, who qualified, informed our correspondent that he won’t be part of the national camp, stating, “I will be having my personal camp with my coaches in the United Kingdom.”
At a ministerial strategic technical meeting between the Minister of Sports Development, Senator John Enoh, and presidents, secretaries, and technical directors of the national sports federations at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, Abuja, Enoh stressed the importance of proper preparations for the Games.
He assured that foreign training tours for athletes would commence immediately after the domestic camp.
While welcoming the boxing team at Ilaji Hotels and Sports Resort, Sports Manager, Babatunde Odubola, said the management of the resort was happy to receive the officials and athletes after their brilliant performance at the African Games.
