Actress and producer, Bose Alao, believes Nigeria’s entertainment industry holds untapped potential to address the country’s most pressing challenges.
In an interview with Saturday Beats, she passionately emphasised how the film and entertainment sector could tackle issues ranging from corruption and economic instability to disunity and inadequate infrastructure.
“The entertainment industry has a unique power to foster unity by portraying diverse narratives that resonate with various ethnic groups. By showcasing shared values and experiences, films can bridge divides and promote national cohesion. A notable film like The Wedding Party brought together diverse cultures in a celebratory narrative, highlighting common traditions and the beauty of unity amid diversity,” she explained.
Alao further highlighted the economic potential of the industry, noting its ability to generate jobs, attract investments, and create local content. “The entertainment industry can drive economic growth by creating job opportunities and attracting investments. By developing local content, we can stimulate the economy and reduce unemployment,” she said.
She also pointed out the urgent need for revitalisation in sectors such as education and healthcare.
“Film and entertainment can be harnessed to inspire entrepreneurship among youths by highlighting success stories and providing training programmes that equip them with necessary skills in media production and storytelling. The entertainment sector can contribute by raising awareness through compelling narratives that spotlight these issues, encouraging public discourse and action,” she added.
Alao called for collaboration between filmmakers, actors, and policymakers, suggesting that leveraging their platforms to advocate positive change could significantly influence policies that benefitted society at large.
