A boat accident along Bennet Island River in Warri South Local Government Area of Delta State has claimed five lives, leaving one person missing.

The Delta State Police Command confirmed the tragic incident, which occurred on Monday night, while providing updates on Tuesday.

According to the police spokesperson, SP Bright Edafe, six passengers sustained injuries and are receiving medical attention, while 19 others were rescued.

“Five found dead, six persons injured and still receiving treatment, 19 persons rescued, one still missing,” Edafe disclosed.

Emergency response teams, including the police, continue to search for the missing individual and are investigating the cause of the mishap.

Details regarding the boat’s destination or direction remain unclear at the time of this report.

The tragedy has sent shockwaves through the local community, prompting renewed calls for stricter safety measures on waterways.

Authorities have urged operators and passengers to prioritise safety protocols to prevent future incidents.
