FUTA to equip health centre

News ArticleFUTA to equip health centre

The Federal University of Technology, Akure, Ondo States, said it has put in place all necessary measures to equip the medical facility of the institution following the death of a student last week.
A 500-level student of the university, Ayomide Akeredolu, on Friday reportedly slumped and died at the health centre of the varsity. Angered by the incident, the students of the institution staged a protest, alleging that the campus hospital lacked amenities, causing the death of the student.
Speaking with our correspondent on the development, on Monday, the Director, Corporate Communication of the university, Mr Adegbenro Adebanjo, said all the demands of the protesting students had been met and the health centre had begun to function properly.
The FUTA spokesman said, “It is important to point out that the protest was not directly related to the death of the student. However, due to some perceived misgivings about services at the university health centre, students embarked on protests.”
During the protest, one of the students alleged that “the student (Ayomide) had slumped while in his hostel (Akindeko Hall of Residence) and was rushed to the university health (a proposed university teaching hospital), due to the lack of basic amenities, he lost his life at the university clinic.”
Another student, who claimed to be one of those who rushed the deceased to the hospital, stated “We rushed the guy to the health center around 8:30 pm, when we got there, there was a power outage, and throughout the oxygen set up, CPR and injections they gave him, the light wasn’t restored, we had to use our flashlights, hard to believe that there’s no backup power supply in the hospital.”
