There were three major upsets in the round of 16 fixtures of this year’s President Federation Cup as Nigeria Premier Football League champions, Enyimba, 3SC and Akwa United were all knocked out of the competition by second tier sides on Wednesday.
The Abuja centre was the slaughter house and 3SC were the first team to be kicked out following a 1-0 defeat in the hands of El-Kanemi Warriors at the FIFA Goal Project Pitch.
Enyimba’s defeat also followed on the same ground with a similar scoreline against Sokoto United while Akwa United also bowed out 1-0 against Kebbi United in Bwari.
Elsewhere in Area 3, Abuja, an eighth minute goal by Lucky Nwafor was enough for Sunshine Stars to beat Rivers United 1-0 and set up a last eight meeting with Kano Pillars.
Other games also lived up to their hypes with penalties required to settle the scores in three fixtures, including the derbies between Inter Lagos and Ikorodu United as well as Kano Pillars against Katsina United.
In Akure, Inter Lagos were reduced to 10 men as early as the fourth minute of their encounter with Ikorodu City, but that didn’t deter them from winning 5-4 on penalties after regulation time ended 1-1.
Kano Pillars and Katsina United also lit up Jos with a thrilling game which ended 1-1 in regular time before Pillars won 8-7 on penalties.
Elsewhere in Ikenne, Abia Warriors beat Kwara United 5-4 on penalties after regulation time ended 1-1 while EFCC’s run in the competition came to an end with a 1-0 defeat against Wikki Tourists.
As Sunshine face Pillars in the last eight, Abia Warriors will also try to negotiate their way past Sokoto United, who beat their sister club and local rivals Enyimba. Inter Lagos and El-Kanemi will try each other for size while Kebbi United and Wikki Tourists will battle for the last semi-finals ticket.
