As the Nasarawa Police Command battles to unravel the circumstances that led a constable within its rank and file to kill himself last week, the Police Public Relations Officer SP Ramhan Nansel has again disclosed to Arewa PUNCH how a student of the Federal Polytechnic, Nasarawa, allegedly hacked a fellow student to death.

The student who has now been arrested by officers of the command for allegedly hacking his fellow student to death following a scuffle was paraded before Arewa PUNCH.

Narrating to our correspondent how the dastardly incident occurred, SP Nansel, explained that the suspect’s arrest followed a complaint from one Madam Mercy Bassey, who is a resident of the area, about a violent altercation between two of her tenants.

As a result of the complaint, detectives attached to the command were dispatched to the scene, where they found one Ibrahim Matthew, a part-time ND2 Computer Science student, lying in a pool of his blood.

Nansel further narrated that the victim was immediately rushed to the General Hospital in Nasarawa but was pronounced dead due to the severity of his injuries.

The PPRO said, “On the 6th of February, 2025, at about 0200hrs, a report was lodged at the Nasarawa Division by one Mercy Bassey, a female resident at the address behind ECWA Peace College, Shagari Road, Nasarawa, regarding a violent altercation between two individuals.

“The incident occurred between one of her tenants and his friend at their lodge.

“Upon receiving the report, the Commissioner of Police, CP Shetima Jauro Mohammed, immediately sent a team of detectives who promptly responded to the scene. The detectives found one Ibrahim Matthew, a part-time ND2 Computer Science student of the Federal Polytechnic Nasarawa (FPN), lying in a pool of his own blood.

“Ibrahim had suffered fatal injuries. He was immediately rushed to the General Hospital Nasarawa, where he was confirmed dead. The body was subsequently deposited in the morgue for post mortem examination.

“Following a swift investigation, the suspect, one John Gambo, a male ND2 student in the Banking and Finance Department of the same institution, was apprehended.

“The suspect confessed to violently attacking and hacking the deceased with both an axe and a knife, leading to Ibrahim Matthew’s tragic death. Both the axe and the knife were recovered from the suspect,” Nansel stated.

The PPRO further explained that the Commissioner of Police, Shetima Jauro Mohammed, had ordered that the case be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Lafia for further investigation and prosecution.
