Hungary suspended a major EU rule on immigration on Tuesday after receiving huge amounts of asylum applications, a government spokesperson said.

The so-called Dublin Regulation stipulates that an EU member country that was first entered by an undocumented migrant must take them back and deal with asylum bids that may follow.

But the spokesman of Prime Minister Victor Orban’s government said that, “Hungary has used up the capacities at its disposal,” adding the South European nation was “overburdened” with immigrants.

Some 60,000 undocumented immigrants have entered Hungary since the start of 2015, according to official statistics as cited by the UK broadcaster BBC. From January to March, the country received over 30,000 asylum applications, making it the second most popular EU migration destination after Germany. In an attempt to stop people from entering illegally from south, Orban announced a plan to build a fence on the border with Serbia.

Hungary’s actions have raised concerns in the EU executive body, the European Commission, that called for an immediate explanation.
