Hurricane Otis made landfall overnight near Acapulco, Mexico, as a Category 5 hurricane with 165-mph winds. The storm rapidly grew from a tropical storm in the morning to Category 5 by evening, the fastest strengthening on record in the northeast Pacific.
Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador told reporters early Wednesday that the government had no information so far on deaths. “But there’s no communication [with the area], we don’t know,” he said.
