Popular Kannywood actress Rahama Sadau has emphasised the importance of taking charge of our narratives and being deliberate in storytelling.
In an interview with Saturday Beats, she shared her aspiration to play an active role in shaping stories that authentically represent her people, encouraging filmmakers to do the same.
She highlighted the significance of putting African stories in the spotlight, especially as global platforms like Netflix and others continue to create opportunities for diverse content.
“I want to be very intentional about telling my own stories. As I always say, we’ve been telling our stories to ourselves for a very long time; now is the time to put ourselves out there even more. With platforms like Netflix and other streaming services, it’s truly a big plus for us.”
Reflecting on the value streaming platforms have added to Nollywood, the actress said, “The presence of streaming platforms has contributed hugely to the growth of the film industry at large. We are now able to tell our stories on a global scale, reaching wider audiences who can see and hear us. I think it’s an amazing development.”
