News ArticleLagos plans new technical, vocational colleges

The Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Mr Jamiu Alli-Balogun, has said the Lagos State Government will establish more technical colleges and vocational learning centres.
According to him, it will help get children and youths out of the streets, saying, they would become self-employed after receiving quality training in vocational and technical education.
While speaking on his vision for the Ministry of Education, on Tuesday, Alli-Balogun added that he had a mindset to further boost and expand the scope of technical and vocational education in the state in line with the theme agenda of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.
He revealed that the Lagos State Government would host the 67th National Council on Education conference in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Education, from Monday 11th to 15th December 2023.
Alli-Balogun said the theme of the conference, ‘Addressing the Challenges of Policy Implementation: A Panacea for the Achievement of Education 2030 Agenda,’ would be chaired by the Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman while Sanwo-Olu would be the special guest of honour.
He said, “We want to take as many youths that is possible away from the streets and expose them to TVET education so that they can be more useful to themselves and society at large and become employers of labour.”
While speaking on preparing the students for the Computer-Based Examination as suggested by the West African Examination Council, he added that it required adequate planning, training, and capital to get all the schools ready without a rush.
He assured that Lagos would seek opportunities to provide additional computers to enhance teaching and further expose students in public schools to the use of computers.
Alli-Balogun commended the Ministry of the Environment for demolishing shanties and ghettos located around schools, saying they were avenues for illicit use and abuse of drugs among students.
