The Lagos State Internal Revenue Service has reminded employers to file their annual tax returns for the 2024 financial year by January 31, 2025, in compliance with the Personal Income Tax Act, Cap P8 LFN 2004 (as amended).

In a statement on Sunday, LIRS Executive Chairman, Dr Ayodele Subair, emphasised that meeting this legal obligation is critical.

He warned that failure to comply could attract statutory sanctions, including penalties.

Section 81 of the Act mandates employers to submit detailed annual returns of all employee emoluments, including taxes deducted and remitted to relevant tax authorities. These returns must be filed no later than January 31 annually, covering the previous year’s income and taxes.

Subair urged employers to prioritise filing to avoid penalties, stating: “Submitting returns on or before the deadline ensures compliance with the law and supports accurate revenue tracking, which is essential for Lagos State’s fiscal planning and sustainability.”

To simplify the process, LIRS now requires employers to file exclusively through its e-Tax portal (https://etax.lirs.net), as manual submissions are no longer accepted. Subair described the platform as secure and user-friendly, designed to ease employers’ compliance efforts.

He added, “Employers are reminded to include the Payer ID of all employees in their returns. Employees without a Taxpayer ID should promptly generate one on the e-Tax platform to avoid disruptions.”

To support compliance, LIRS staff are available at its offices to guide employers on using the e-Tax portal and address any concerns.

Subair encouraged prompt action to meet the deadline and fulfill tax obligations.
