An expert in migration studies, Ojeikere Akhadelor, has recommended increased language and vocational training to tackle refugee integration challenges in Nigeria.
In a statement, Akhadelor, a Chapman University graduate, unveiled his research titled ‘The Impact of Refugee Resettlement Programmes on Local Communities in America: A Case Study of New York City,’ which could help tackle global refugee integration challenges, including Nigeria’s.
“The study identifies key challenges in refugee integration, including housing shortages, overburdened healthcare and education systems, and the influence of community attitudes shaped by political rhetoric,” the statement read.
Akhadelor’s research emphasised the economic benefits of refugee resettlement while addressing the pressing challenges associated with resource allocation in urban areas, noting “Refugees play a pivotal role in economic revitalisation by filling essential jobs, starting businesses, and stimulating local markets.”
However, he highlighted that integration efforts often stumble due to housing shortages, limited educational opportunities, and strained healthcare systems.
The researcher who conducted his study in the United States of America noted his findings were not unique to New York City, USA but similar to places like Nigeria’s Lagos.
“The systemic barriers refugees face are universal, and Nigeria’s urban centres like Lagos can benefit from adopting targeted strategies to improve socio-economic and cultural outcomes for refugees and host communities alike,” he remarked.
Akhadelor proposed solutions that could be adapted to the Nigerian context, including, Vocational and Language Training which equips refugees with job-ready skills and language proficiency to enhance their integration into the workforce.
He also recommended promoting community-based initiatives to foster trust, intercultural dialogue and equitable resource distribution.
Also, he recommended developing policies to ensure fair access to housing, healthcare, and education for both refugees and local residents.
“These measures aim to enhance social harmony, economic equity, and resilience in metropolitan areas,” the researcher added.
Akhadelor called on “Policymakers, Non-Governmental Organisations, and communities to collaborate to address systemic barriers while recognising refugees as drivers of economic growth and cultural diversity.”
