The Lagos State Wastewater Management Office has sealed public toilets at Katangua market for illegal discharge of sewage and untreated wastewater into the environment.

The public toilets included the two inside Ile-Epo market along the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway.

According to a Wednesday statement from LSWMO, the operators of the public toilets were seen using pumping machines to pump untreated wastewater and sewage into public drains, thereby polluting the environment and exposing citizens to communicable diseases through the discharge.

“The toilets were sealed by the enforcement and compliance officers of the agency who investigated and saw all the illegal activities that have great environmental hazard consequences,” the statement said.

It quoted LSWMO General Manager, Adefemi Afolabi, as stressing that “the state has zero tolerance for environmental pollution and degradation.”

The agency, according to him, remains undeterred in its efforts to ensure a clean and healthy environment in the state for the sake of the public health of the citizens of the state.

Afolabi said, “Public toilets and other facilities that contravene the law will continue to be sanctioned in line with the provisions of the Lagos State Environmental Management and Protection Law 2017.”
