Starfield Montessori School, Lekki, has encouraged parents to harness the benefits of the internet for children’s learning development and also apply caution when needed.
A statement by the school during a hybrid seminar titled, ‘Raising Kids in the Digital Age,’ said that the digital age era ushered unprecedented technological advancements, and also revealed a horde of challenges in the aspect of parenting.
It revealed that a panel session, which consisted of a Data Analyst, Ms. Mfonabasi Omagbemi, the CEO, Beibei Haven, Ms. Omotade Alade, a Digital Content Creator, Ms. Chinyere Abang, the CEO, Rhed and Maya, Ms. Rema Udo, an Information Assurance, Policy and Governance Advisor, Ms Dooshima Dapo-Oyewole, and a Children’s Author and Convener of Akada Children’s Book Festival, Mrs Olubunmi Aboderin-Talabi, discussed how best to raise children in this new era.
It added that the seminar aimed at dissecting the digital age as an intricate ecosystem that when harnessed wisely, could foster creativity, curiosity, and connectivity, saying when left unchecked, could pose profound challenges to children’s physical, emotional, and intellectual development.
Udo said, “Not all internet access is equal. The truth is that unrestricted access is never good.” The internet isn’t the problem but ensuring that our kids are accessing the right information and sites on the internet.”
Mfonabasi stated “The internet has been a major contributor to how my daughter learns.
Preventing measures by instilling value in her.  We need to train our children to the point where they can make the right decisions on their own.”
Also, Alade advised parents to discipline their children whenever they noticed any form of disobedience.
Abang stated that she used parenting apps to monitor the applications her kids were on.
