The newly appointed Commissioner of Police for the Federal Capital Territory, CP Adewale Ajao, has unveiled his comprehensive strategy to enhance security in Abuja, focusing on overhauling the intelligence department and adopting advanced technology to combat crime.

At a press briefing held on Thursday at the command headquarters in Garki, Ajao detailed his plans to employ modern, technology-driven policing methods to address the ever-evolving security challenges in the nation’s capital.

“We are not unaware of the security challenges posed by crimes and violence, social unrest, kidnapping, youth restiveness, and cybercrime.

“But I stand before you today, committed to tackling these challenges head-on,” he said.

Ajao disclosed that the command would implement state-of-the-art surveillance systems, including CCTV cameras, drones, and digital crime mapping tools, to ensure real-time monitoring and swift responses to distress calls.

Additionally, a 24-hour Command and Control Centre will be established to coordinate security operations and enhance emergency responses.

“My vision is anchored on the strategic priorities set by the Inspector General of Police, which emphasize community policing, intelligence-led operations, and the use of technology to combat crime.

“In line with this vision, and building on the foundation laid by my predecessor, my mission is to ensure that every resident of the FCT feels safe and secure in their homes, workplaces, and public spaces,” Ajao added.

Focus on Intelligence, Collaboration

As part of his reform agenda, Ajao announced plans to revamp the State Intelligence Department to strengthen crime prevention strategies through effective intelligence gathering and analysis.

“We will re-jig our State Intelligence Department into a more robust intelligence unit that will gather, analyze, and act on actionable intelligence to prevent crimes before they occur,” he stated.

He also emphasized the importance of collaboration with other security agencies, including the Nigerian Armed Forces, the Department of State Services, and the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps, to improve information sharing and joint operations.

Community Policing, Trust Building

To deepen community policing efforts, Ajao pledged to engage local leaders, youth groups, and traditional rulers in addressing grassroots security concerns.

He also plans to hold regular town hall meetings to foster trust and cooperation between residents and the police.

“Achieving the task of a peaceful and crime-free FCT is our collective responsibility. I urge all stakeholders to join me in making our capital city safer for all,” Ajao said.

Professionalism, Officer Welfare

Highlighting the importance of professionalism, Ajao reiterated his zero-tolerance policy for corruption and misconduct within the police force.

He stressed the need for integrity, accountability, and a partnership-oriented approach to security.

“We will uphold the highest standards of professionalism and ensure that the police are seen as partners in security rather than mere enforcers,” he assured.

Additionally, the CP vowed to prioritize the training and welfare of officers to equip them with the necessary skills and motivation for effective performance.

With a clear focus on technology, intelligence, and collaboration, Ajao called on all stakeholders and residents to support his vision of making Abuja a model city for crime control and public safety.
