Nigeria has emerged as a powerhouse at the ongoing 2nd Africa Military Games in Abuja, delivering a commanding performance in wrestling that has positioned the nation as a formidable contender in the multi-sport military competition.

Team Nigeria showcased exceptional prowess, securing an impressive haul of 11 gold, 12 silver, and 7 bronze medals in wrestling, bringing their total medal count to a remarkable 30 across various sporting events. The wrestling achievement underscores the Nigerian Armed Forces’ commitment to excellence in athletic competition.

The games, which commenced on Monday, have brought together approximately 1,625 athletes from 21 African countries competing across 20 different sporting disciplines. Nigeria’s performance has been particularly outstanding, with the team demonstrating strength not only in wrestling but also in other events such as taekwondo.

In taekwondo, Team Nigeria claimed four gold medals, with Mohammed Yusuf winning in the men’s 54kg category, Bisallah Rejoice triumphing in the women’s 46kg division, Ibeh Nancy securing victory in the women’s 49kg class, and Anam Glory emerging victorious in the women’s 53kg category.

The Nigerian Armed Forces further solidified their dominance by clinching two gold medals in handball, defeating Ghana in both men’s and women’s finals. This comprehensive performance highlights the nation’s military sporting capabilities and commitment to the games’ theme of “strengthening military cooperation through sport”.

The 2nd Africa Military Games, set to continue until November 30, provide a unique platform for military athletes across the continent to showcase their skills, endurance, and team spirit. Nigeria’s wrestling and overall performance demonstrates the nation’s athletic prowess and military sporting excellence.

As the competition progresses, all eyes remain on Team Nigeria, whose exceptional showing has set a high standard for military sporting achievement in the African continent.
