Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has said Nigeria needs urgent restructuring to enable citizens to enjoy the benefits of democracy.

Speaking on Tuesday in Yola at a coalition meeting attended by members of various political parties, the 2023 Peoples Democratic Party presidential candidate said things were not going in the right direction.

“We need a new movement that we can use to correct things; if we do not act this time, our children will become slaves in their father’s land,” he said.

Atiku added that he would soon address national issues and clarify his political stance, urging his supporters to remain calm and focused.

“It is not yet time for me to speak on the politics of the country, but very soon I will break my silence on my political position and other things that are going on wrongly in the country,” he stated.

He called on Nigerians to be vigilant and work for the country’s interest, describing the new movement as a potential saviour.

The meeting’s convener, Senator Ishaku Abbo, told attendees that Atiku remained their political leader, regardless of party affiliation.

He said, “The former vice president you are our party, you are our logo, anywhere you go we will follow you”.

Abbo said that Atiku’s leadership qualities exhibited during his eight years tenure as vice president endeared him in the hearts of democrats.

The event was attended by representatives from all 21 local government areas of Adamawa State, including aides of the All Progressives Congress’ 2023 governorship candidate, Senator Aishatu Binani.

One of Binani’s aides, who spoke on condition of anonymity, confirmed her involvement in the coalition.

“For you to see me here, it is very clear that my principal is among the coalition team, you see other members of the APC who are her supporters here,” he said.

He said that Senator Binnani was engaged in other activities, but that “the next meeting she will be in attendance”.
