For the third year running, some Nollywood actors will attend the prestigious Essence Film Festival in New Orleans, United States of America, from July 5 to July 10, 2024.
Facilitated by That Good Media, founded by Toyosi Etim-Effiong, the festival is expected to give Nollywood its much-desired global recognition through collaboration with the movie industries in other countries.
Speaking at a media parley in Lagos during the week, Etim-Effiong noted that this year’s appearance at the festival marked a significant milestone in Nollywood’s journey toward international acclaim.
She added that the event would afford Nollywood celebrities and Hollywood figures the opportunity to exchange ideas and experiences.
Etim-Effiong said, “Our participation at Essence Film Festival not only showcases the unique narratives and talents of Nollywood, but also reinforces our commitment to creating global dialogues through film.
“Black people all over the world love Nollywood and we are giving them the opportunity to partner with us, and not just watch from a distance.”
The media entrepreneur added that panelists at the festival would discuss strategic alliances and the role of storytelling in fostering cultural exchanges and deepening global understanding.
She also urged Nigerian film professionals to broaden their horizons, encouraging them to explore the world, learn from diverse film industries, and participate in international festivals.
Reflecting on the success of the 2023 edition of the film festival’s inaugural Nigeria Day, Etim-Effiong noted that she thought they would be given a small corner, but to her surprise, Nollywood was given its own stand to showcase its rich contents.
On his part, the Director of the Essence Film Festival, Lamonia Brown, said, “We are thrilled to host Nollywood’s vibrant showcase, which is a testament to the rich cultural heritage and storytelling prowess that Nigerian cinema brings to our global audience.”
