The National Sports Commission has granted a $5,000 boost to Nigeria’s campaign at the 2025 ICC U-19 Women’s T20 World Cup in Malaysia, the country’s apex sports body announced on Sunday.

Nigeria’s Junior Female Yellow Greens are currently chasing history at the 16-nation tournament as they gear up for their last Super 6 match against Ireland on Wednesday.

Ahead of the crucial game, the NSC announced a $5,000 (N7,560,000) – as at Sunday’s exchange rate – boost for the team while the commission’s Director-General, Bukola Olopade, also made a personal contribution of $1,000 (N1,512,000) to team captain Piety Lucky.

“NSC Director General Bukola Olopade conveyed messages of support from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and NSC Chairman Shehu Dikko, encouraging the team to continue their historic performance,” NSC said in a statement via X.

“Hon. Olopade also made a personal contribution of $1,000 to team captain Lucky Piety to fulfil her request for a laptop. Additional incentives have been promised for each subsequent victory.”

Although their first Super 6 game against England was washed out on Saturday, the Junior Female Yellow Greens are still in contention for a place in the semi-finals of the tournament.

As both sides shared a point in the game, Nigeria are now third in the Super Six Group 2 with three points and they will hope to continue chasing history in Malaysia when they face Ireland in the last Super 6 game on Wednesday at the YSD-UKM Cricket Oval, Bangi.

The top two teams in the Super 6 stage will advance to the last four.

South Africa lead the Super Six group with six points followed by England with four points while Nigeria are third with three points, thanks to a better net run rate than the USA.

Before the tournament, the Nigerian team had set a semi-final target for themselves and their progress into the current stage is no mean feat as well.

They caused an upset in the group stages of the tournament, beating New Zealand by two runs in their second game.
