Despite Udinese’s 2-0 defeat to Atalanta, Nigeria international, Maduka Okoye, was included in Serie A’s Team of The Week following an impressive display against the Black and Blues, PRIMANEWS Sports Extra reports.
After struggling for first-team action since joining the Italian club in the summer and has been second choice for most of the season, Maduka has been handed a starting spot in the club’s past five games.
In the game against Atalanta, despite conceding two goals, the former Sparta Rotterdam goalkeeper made nine saves to keep the score at a minimal level.
The Nigerian goalkeeper was busy all day and it was his fine display that saw Udinese concede only two goals as Gabriele Cioffi’s men ran riot.
In his last five games, Okoye has kept one clean sheet and conceded nine goals and is using his absence from the National team to build his confidence after being out of action for a very long while.
Maduka was in goal during the previous edition of the AFCON tournament hosted in Cameroon but wasn’t called up by Jose Peseiro for the current edition, with the Portuguese opting for the trio of Olorunleke Ojo, Stanley Nwabali and Francis Uzoho.
In Maduka’s absence, Nwabali has kept three clean sheets and conceded one goal at the AFCON 2023 tournament in Ivory Coast, keeping the backline tight and reliable.
