Super Eagles defender, Bruno Onyemaechi, has joined 47-time Greek champions Olympiacos FC from Boavista in Portugal.

The Greek club announced the signing in a statement on its website on Monday.

“The 25-year-old player joins from Portuguese club Boavista, where he made 77 appearances, scored five goals, and provided three assists,” the statement read.

“This season, he has played in 18 matches, contributing three goals and one assist.”

In total, he made 77 appearances for the club, scored five goals and provided three assists in three years. Onyemaechi has been a standout performer for Boavista this season, excelling in a versatile role as a wing back and advanced midfielder.

According to local reports, Onyemaechi penned a four-year deal with the 2024 Europa Conference League champions and a transfer fee of €2.5m.

Olympiacos secured the defender’s signature after a close bidding contest with Benfica and Fenerbahce.

Onyemaechi joined Boavista in 2023 after a spell at Fereinse and a loan move to Vila Real in Portugal.

The Owerri-born defender debuted for the Super Eagles of Nigeria in the 6-0 defeat of Sao Tome and Principe in 2023. He is an active member of the Nigerian national team, having earned 11 caps.

He was also in the squad that finished second at the Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast. Onyemaechi was the second-choice left-back behind Zaidu Sanusi.

Boavista is expected to retain a percentage of Onyemaechi’s future transfer value, signalling their belief in his potential to attract even bigger moves.

His move to Olympiakos will delight the defender, as it offers him the opportunity to compete at a higher level and continue his development on the European stage.

The defender’s arrival at the club is expected to bolster the Greek side’s squad as they push for domestic and European success this season.

Onyemaechi has earned 11 caps for Nigeria and was part of the Super Eagles squad for the most recent Africa Cup of Nations in the Ivory Coast.
