Organisers of Chess4Change, a pioneering initiative that harnesses the power of chess to drive positive change in communities, have announced the commencement of its 9th edition.
The programme aims to provide a platform for students from underserved secondary schools to develop critical thinking, problem-solving, and analytical skills through chess.
According to the organisers, through the initiative, young minds are empowered, academic performances are boosted, and a culture of strategic thinking and creativity is built.
“For nearly a decade, the Chess4Change initiative has continued to impact the lives of Lagos State secondary school students’’, said Kenneth Erikume, Country Operations Partner, PwC Nigeria.
“It has helped them improve their academic performance and also develop communication, teamwork, and leadership skills. These successes are because of the collective effort of our stakeholders. PwC is honoured to continue collaborating with the Lagos State Government (Ministry of Education and Lagos Sports Commission), Lagos State Chess Association, and Media Vision. Chess4Change allows us to unlock the potential of Lagos’ youth, building a strong foundation for their future through the strategic thinking and problem-solving skills honed through chess.”
Olufunke Young, Director of Co-Curricular Lagos State Ministry of Education, commended PwC Nigeria for its continued commitment and support for the Chess4Change programme.
“The partnership between PwC and Chess4Change has been instrumental in the remarkable growth and success achieved,” she said.
“The steadfast support has aided expansion as well as the reach and impact of even more young lives.”
The initiative has yielded outstanding results, with several participating schools excelling in national chess competitions. Notably, Ireti Senior Grammar School Falomo Ikoyi, winner of last year’s PwC Chess4change Grand Slam Tournament, secured 3rd place in the secondary school category of the Ecobank National Schools Team Chess Championship, held in May 2024. This impressive feat marks the culmination of dedication, hard work, and strategic partnerships between PwC Nigeria and all stakeholders.
This year’s edition will kick off in June 2024 with tutelage sessions across the participating schools that will end with a Grand Slam Tournament in October 2024.
It will feature eighteen (18) participating schools from across 4 education districts in Lagos State who will learn and compete amongst themselves.
