Super Falcons striker Asisat Oshoala believes the women’s senior national team will hit their strides again this year as they hope to reclaim the WAFCON title at this year’s tournament in Morocco, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

The Falcons have dominated the continent for several years, winning 11 African women’s football titles but their last piece of silverware was in 2018.

Ahead of this year’s tournament which will be played from July 5 to 26 in North Africa, Oshoala said the Super Falcons would build on their recent performances to return to the top of African women’s football in Morocco.

“As usual, we have to focus on 2025 and grab another opportunity to try again and get back to winning ways and bringing trophies home like we used to,” Oshoala said during an X space organised by Super Eagles defender Kenneth Omeruo.

“Also, there is a lot of work that needs to be done and after the past couple of tournaments, we are building on the positive outcome. Although we didn’t come out of the group stage of the Olympics, I think we had good competition and we were able to compete with them.

“We have incredible young talents from the local league and foreign-based players learning to play with one another better now.

“The year 2025 is going to be better. The mentality is different now, everyone wants to win, and the players are fighting for shirts because there is no automatic spot. We have had back-to-back top games and we just have to keep that up and the WAFCON will be a good outing for us.”

After their last WAFCON title in 2018, the Super Falcons under coach Randy Waldrum finished fourth at the 2022 edition in Morocco – with a defeat to South Africa in the group stages and the the third-place loss against Zambia being reality checks on the team’s supposed dominance in Africa.
