Napoli striker Victor Osimhen will undergo a fresh test with the club’s medics on Thursday (today) to determine how soon he will return to action.
The Nigerian returned to the club on Wednesday and has been sidelined since October 13 due to a hamstring injury he suffered while on duty for Nigeria during an international friendly against Saudi Arabia. His last game for Napoli was on October 8 when he scored in their 3-1 win over Fiorentina.
Osimhen was said to miss up to six weeks of action when he sustained the injury and according to the club’s director, Mauro Meluso, Osimhen will be assessed on Thursday as the club anticipates his return.
“Osimhen is back. The medics will evaluate him on Thursday to see when he will be back on the field, it was predicted to be five or six weeks out when he first suffered the injury,” Meluso said via Football Italia.
Osimhen has missed five games for Napoli and his absence also raised more questions around the lack of a new contract agreement.
“We have been talking about his contract for months, so even if the negotiations are getting on a bit, we will continue along the right path to take,” Meluso added on the player’s contract.
While he was out injured, Osimhen finished eighth in the rankings of this year’s Ballon d’Or which was won by Lionel Messi and has been nominated for the 2023 CAF Player of the Year Award which will also be handed out on December 11 in Morocco.
Osimhen who has six goals in eight games for Napoli this season will undergo further tests on his arrival in Naples to assess the progress of his rehabilitation while he has been excluded by Peseiro for this month’s 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers against Zimbabwe and Lesotho.
