Chancellor of Augustine University, Epe, Mr Femi Otedola, has donated N3.7bn for the construction of a new engineering building at the institution.

According to a statement on Monday, the donation marks the second phase of Otedola’s commitment to establishing a Faculty of Engineering at the university.

Last year, Otedola initiated the first phase of this ambitious project, also valued in the billions, and further enhanced student support by contributing one million naira toward each student’s tuition fees.

During the university’s sixth convocation ceremony, he expressed confidence that the second phase of the engineering building would be completed within 12 months.

In his address to the graduating students, Otedola emphasised the broader purpose of education, urging them to view it not just as a means of personal success, but as a platform for serving others.

“Remember that character is as important as knowledge.

“Your degree is not just a symbol of your academic achievements; it is a testament to your commitment to learning and living a life of integrity. You are entering a world that needs your skills, your ideas, and your leadership. But more than that, it needs your character.”

Also addressing the graduates, the Catholic Bishop of the Lagos Archdiocese, Most Rev. Dr. Alfred Adewale Martins, highlighted the university’s mission to cultivate well-rounded individuals.

“Education at Augustine University is not merely about intellectual development; it is about forming individuals who are morally grounded and spiritually enriched,” he remarked.

Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Christopher Odetunde expressed gratitude to Otedola and other supporters for their contributions to the university, including Chief Stephen Bakare’s donation for the Faculty of Law Complex. He also acknowledged the ongoing construction of new hostels by members of the Church of Assumption, Falomo, and Our Lady of Perpetual Help.

The convocation lecturer, Dr Peter Bamkole, spoke on “Rethinking Economic Rebirth in Nigeria through Youth Entrepreneurship,” stressing the importance of equipping young people with skills that will make them valuable in the labor market.

This significant donation and the messages delivered at the convocation reflected Augustine University’s commitment to fostering a holistic educational environment that prepares students not only for careers but also for ethical leadership in society.
