Former champions Plateau United boosted their chances of escaping relegation in the 2024/25 Nigeria Premier Football League with a slim 1-0 win over Abia Warriors during a match-day 28 game in Jos on Sunday, The PUNCH reports.

A 54th-minute penalty from Olawale Doyeni made the difference for the Peace Boys, ultimately moving them out of the relegation zone into the 14th position on the log with 34 points after 14 matches.

It was the Jos side’s third win in their last three matches, adding to their run of contrasting results in the fight against the drop.

Their struggle is also compounded by a three-point deduction which was slammed on them by the NPFL board after the trouble that erupted in their game against Rangers International in November.

Plateau United still have eight more games to secure their safety in the NPFL this season.

Meanwhile, the relegation battle in the 2024/25 NPFL season keeps getting intense with at least 10 teams still battling against the drop.

Lobi Stars, who are yet to win in 11 consecutive games are bottom of the table with 23 points. Their woes were further compounded by a 1-0 home defeat against Ikorodu City on Saturday.

Akwa United forced defending champions Rangers International to a 1-1 draw in Enugu on Sunday, but the result only leaves them five points above Lobi Stars as they sit in the 19th position.

Kabir Osoba scored for the Promise Keepers in the 24th minute of the game but his strike was cancelled out by a 48th-minute penalty by Saviour Isaac.

In Lafia, last week’s hat-trick hero, Ahmadu Liman, continued his fine run for Sunshine Stars with a goal against Nasarawa United as the Akure-based side managed a 1-1 draw against Nasarawa United.

The result left them in a precarious 18th position on the log with 32 points, the same as Nasarawa United, who complete the bottom four but Sunshine Stars have a huge goal deficit of -15.
